Holidays 2019 in Toledo, OH – home of Danny Thomas, Joey Brown, Phyliss Diller, Art Tatum and my namesake just to name a few is celebrating the Holidays with dedications to the music of the University of Toledo Jazz Department and it’s very talented Vocal Chorus, Orchestra and Music Department.. HOLY TOLEDO!.. Enjoy!
With its Santa hats and cut-loose Christmas spirit, the Toledo Jazz Orchestra will put on its annual holiday concert inside downtown Toledo’s Valentine Theatre, 410 Adams St., at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Ron Kischuk, a trombonist who also serves as TJO’s artistic director, promises a few surprises.
He quipped how the holiday show is one in which the orchestra is usually “taking the music seriously, but not ourselves too seriously.”
There will be some familiar Christmas songs, but none of the concerts are ever exact repeats.
For example, there will be something from last year’s Nutcracker Suite the orchestra played, based on the jazzy interpretations of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 1892 classic by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, he said.
Most people don’t realize that both Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky were Jazz Composers in the Classical arena.. explore the theory for yourself, they were classical “rule breakers” and Masters of the Piano and Orchestra as well.. even ‘The Duke’ knew that! Pops is noted for setting words to and arranging Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Piano Concerto before being embraced by the universal ‘spirits of the Muse’ a couple of years ago.. 😊
