Its still early in the research Baccalieu Island Ecological Reserve . Baccalieu Island is the continent’s second largest puffin colony. It is also home to black-legged kittiwake, common and thick-billed murres, razorbills, black guillemots, a few northern fulmars, and a small gannet colony. hat is estimated to be over 3.3 million pairs of Leach’s storm-petrel This is the world’s largest gathering of these starling-sized, tube nosed, burrowing birds. It is a site of one of only six colonies of Northern Gannet and one of only three nesting sites for the Northern Fulmar. The Atlantic Puffin as well as the Common Murre are found in abundance here. Baccalieu is also the most southerly limit for the Thick-billed Murre and Razorbill. Along with these species can be found the Black Guillemot, the Black-Legged Kittywake, the Herring Gull and the Great Black-Backed Gull. Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve estimates that the site is home to 24,000 northern gannets, 20,000 black-legged kittiwakes, 20,000 common murres, and 2,000 thick-billed murres, as well as dozens or hundreds of razorbill, and black guillemot breeding pairs.
